Having read both the Telegraph review of this book and Richard Weight’s previous publication, Patriots, I was keen to see if this book lived up to the reputation and positive press surrounding it. Well, I am pleased to say that it does. I’ll start off by stressing that I am not an expert on this period. However I am fascinated by youth culture in the UK and the book provides a very comprehensive and detailed introduction and analysis of what Mod really means. From the origins through to the end of the decade, the book examines how Mod grew and impacted society and beyond. Helpfully, it also puts in to context a number of cultural references which I have seen over the years but never truly understood nor identified with the Mod movement. The biggest surprise for me was the scope of the book. I had presumed that the content would focus on the 1960’s, however it continues through to the 21st century with Weight examining how Mod has impacted some of our more recent cultural developments. A thoroughly enjoyable read which has given me an understanding of what Mod really means.

This is essentially an academic work and nobody could accuse Richard Weight of not doing his reading ,though the author’s debt to previous contributors is for the most part acknowledged.Chief among these, unsurprisingly, is Paolo Hewitt and this book takes the premise of “Soul Stylists” and extends it to a degree that is frankly ludicrous. But at least those disciples, who believe that every event in the history of the world since 1958,can be attributed to Mod,have found a new messiah.
