Up to now, no one outside of official circles has known exactly what would happen if a rogue state launched a nuclear missile at the Pentagon. Second by second and minute by minute, these are the real-life protocols that choreograph the end of civilisation as we know it. Frantic calls over secure lines work to confirm the worst as armoured helicopters are scrambled to evacuate the chosen few to secure bunkers. One nuclear missile will provoke two dozen in return. Decisions over hundreds of millions of lives need to be made within six minutes, based on partial information, knowing that once launched, nothing is capable of halting the destruction.
Based on dozens of new interviews with military and civilian experts, Nuclear War is at once a compulsive non-fiction thriller and a powerful argument that we must rid ourselves of these world-ending weapons for ever.

non è una fiction
I am a chemist, and worked for more than forty years in the defense industry. So, let me say, I am in a good position to understand the technical aspects and the implications of the book. What strikes me about this excellent book is that it contains very clear, actual premises about what could eventually trigger the nuclear war and a terryfing description of the outcome but also how poor is the public acknowledgment (not to say control) of the decision making processes involved, all highly classified. But in the end what surfaces very clear is the role of hate and distrust in the triggering of the events.

Realistico e sconvolgente

A good idea, hopefully for a warning movie
This book could be a good inspiration for a movie, similar to ‘the day after’ that could help to bring people to their senses and start despising the too many idiots who speak of a nuclear war as if it made any sense starting one. It is a pity that the way things happen is the usual childish idea of the mad bad guy that wants to hit the always good US. In fact the reality is more complex and there is never a good guy and a bad guy, like in the movies. Anyway it is a good quick read and I recommend it.

Titolo attuale

Letto in 1 giorno. Inquietante.
Preciso, tecnico e cinico.

Annie Jacobsenâs latest work is a masterclass in investigative journalism, offering a compelling deep dive into one of the most complex and dangerous topics of our time: the looming threat of nuclear war. Her meticulous research, backed by an impressive array of declassified documents and interviews, creates a comprehensive and authoritative narrative that sheds light on how global powers are preparing for this unimaginable scenario. Jacobsenâs writing is both informative and engaging, balancing technical detail with vivid storytelling. She pulls back the curtain on a world where cutting-edge science and military strategy converge, providing readers with a chilling but necessary understanding of the stakes involved. What makes Jacobsenâs book so powerful is not just the depth of her research, but her ability to humanize such an overwhelming topic. She doesnât just present data and strategy; she explores the motivations, fears, and ethical dilemmas faced by the scientists, military leaders, and policymakers who are shaping the future of warfare. Jacobsen raises profound questions about the moral cost of pursuing technologies that could potentially end civilization, making her work not only a gripping read but a deeply thought-provoking one. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of global security and the evolving landscape of modern warfare.Thank you Annie!
