The Moonstone, a priceless yellow diamond, is looted from an Indian temple and maliciously bequeathed to Rachel Verinder. On her eighteenth birthday, her friend and suitor Franklin Blake brings the gift to her. That very night, it is stolen again. No one is above suspicion, as the idiosyncratic Sergeant Cuff and the Franklin piece together a puzzling series of events as mystifying as an opium dream and as deceptive as the nearby Shivering Sand. T. S. Eliot famously described THE MOONSTONE as ‘the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels’, but, as Sandra Kemp discusses in her introduction, it offers many other facets, which reveal Collins’s sensibilities as untypical of his era.

Some “classics” should be allowed to quietly leave the canon.
I’m sure this was an amazing read when it first came out, but by today’s standards it is nothing special at all. It’s regarded as a classic, so I suppose it will stay in print forever; but frankly this book deserves to be forgotten about by most readers.

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins was a part of English studies in my senior high, about 23 years ago in an abridged form. I really enjoyed the story back then and decided to read the full unabridged novel at some point of time in the future. Finally, I am really glad I read the full unabridged novel for it is a very well-written detective fiction novel, not just the first of its kind, probably also only one of its kind with its various narratives by various characters all coming together to form a perfectly well aligned story. It gives an amazing perspective of each character that narrates the story, developing a sense of connection with people in the story.I also like Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle for the stories I finished (and do wish to finish the entire volume someday). Whatâs great is the very logical and rational way of solving the problems at hand which is something I found in The Moonstone as well. Even if the narratives were by different characters, it is written without gaps and perfect logical and rational explanations articulated so meticulously. Itâs interesting to read the narratives of Miss Clack and the letter from Rosanna Spearman which probably makes this book very unique for writing from such perspectives as it is rather extremely rare, specially in a book as this.Apart from the plot and characters, the language is of my interest for it has a lot of words and some archaic that are no longer used in English. It is always good to get insights into how people lived, how they used the language back then, how they corresponded, travelled and overall the life back in those centuries. Itâs impressive the knowledge Wilkie Collins had back then or the research he did to able to write the effect of opium on human physiology as well as nervous system. Have a certain respect towards Ezra Jennings and his contribution in the book while sad for his life and his painful ending. However, I am also happy for Franklin Blake and Rachel Verinder. Finally, I am actually inspired to read Robinson Crusoe, all Thanks to Gabriel Betteredge! ð Overall, itâs just an amazing read for the classic literature lovers and language aficionados as well detective (fiction) story fanatics. ðð

Mr Collins has outdone himself again in my eyes! I loved the race of the plot at the end after hating the narration ofMiss Clack . The most simple of mysteries and yet the most unexpected twists and turns! Wow. I can’t believe that this would be one of my favourites!

Excelente relación calidad-precio. El tamaño de la letra está perfecto teniendo en cuenta que es un libro con formato más pequeño que los de otras ediciones. Libro manejable y fuerte. Muy satisfecha con la compra.

The book is just a photocopy. Lines are missing, can’t highlight passages because it’s just a picture basically. Really low quality and not worth even 2,69. Very disappointing. The story is great though, but I recommend finding a different version.
