   There are other dash cams that are more expensive and filled with features you might never use – this one comes with very nice features that you will use.I upgraded to a Dash Cam 56 from the 55 only because I wanted to add a rear facing mini Garmin Mini Cam to shoot video out the rear window. The three accidents I’ve been involved in in 20 years were all when I was rear-ended at a stop light. In all three cases, those that struck my car were drug users, specifically hard-core meth users. That was unmistakable. In my most recent rear-ender accident, the young woman’s first words to me when I walked up to see if she was injured were “man, I haven’t slept in almost three days”. Seriously, she said that. I wrote down her license tag number because I suspected she would flee… and she did.Anyway, you can spend twice as much on other cameras but most of those features are of questionable worth. These Garmin models offer reliable voice command operation – all you have to do is say “OK Garmin”. To take a picture, say Take a Picture. To record audio with the video, say Record Audio (although you can turn that on permanently) To record video without audio, say Stop Audio. To start Travelapse™ recording, say Start Travelapse. To stop Travelapse recording, say Stop Travelapse.My 56 runs warm, but not hot… as my Garmin Dash Cam 55 did, although that was never an issue for me even here in Phoenix. How a dash cam handles high heat is significant in those areas that receive 105-115 degree summer temperatures.The 1440 (2K) video is very good. There are some nice units that record in 4K video, but there are reports of some/many running so hot they auto-shut down.The data that is overlaid on the video recorded contains the time, date, GPS location and vehicle speed – everything you need and without adding an optional module.The app available for the Garmin 56 is called Garmin Drive… and it works well. It isn’t amazingly fast, but it isn’t horribly slow either. I’m speaking about vehicles WITHOUT it’s own Wi-Fi capability.If you are involved in a car crash, you’re going to be on scene with police for quite a while, so if it takes 3-5 minutes to Blu-Tooth a one minute video segment to your six inch phone display, this isn’t a problem, at least not to me. If it took just 15 seconds, you’re still going to be on scene with police for 45 minutes or more. If absolute speed is a requirement, pop out the micro SD card, place it in an SD adapter card (which I carry in my vehicle, with a USB/Lightning SD card adapter) and you’re all set… or just replay the crash instantly on the two inch display, although two inches is pretty small to try to specify detail.What I really like about the Garmin Dash Cams is their useful feature set, ease of use, very good video recording capability and very small and unobtrusive size. Mine is located behind the rear view mirror and an average thief hasn’t even noticed it on a casual glance looking for targeted articles to steal.While my Garmin Dash Cam 56 is new, and serves my needs very well, I’m quite sure in a few years when Garmin packs in further features into it’s dash cams, I will be a repeat customer.Am I a Garmin “Fan-Boy”?To the extent I appreciate tech that does what it advertises, yep… I am.

   To start off, I bought the Garmin Dash Cam 56.I wanted to write this review because no one seemed to be talking about the driver assist functionality. So if you’re expecting the same level of performance you will get from a built in system you are going to be disappointed. But overall it’s pretty good. The “go” alert to tell you the car ahead of you started to move is far too hyperactive; I disabled that. But the lane departure is very good; it can even see broken lines. It too can be a little hyperactive; if they just resealed the center of the road it can see that as a line at times and sometimes exit lanes (with their smaller dashes) are mistaken for broken side lines, but it’s good too. And the forward collision warning, while a little sensitive for city driving, generally only fires if you are legitimately too close to the car ahead of you. Each of the warnings I described come with their own sounds, so even if you position the dash cam so you can’t see the screen (as I did) you can still tell exactly what it’s upset about after about a week. They also seem to be undeterred by rain or darkness night driving.The app is great, camera quality is good, mounting process is easy, cord is long and thin and easy to hide, and the incident detection feature works well with only detecting excessively hard braking (like full-on panic braking). And the fact that you don’t have to pair your phone for it to track your speed and position is great, though the coordinate readout on the video is less intuitive than what you would get with, say, a Nexar. That said I got the Garmin because I didn’t want to deal with the battery drain issues I saw in some Nexar reviews or risk having my phone not connect to it and then not getting location data on my video.Biggest caution I can give is it has no Micro SD card so you have to get your own, and it needs a few seconds to turn on.I know that is a lot but it’s what I would’ve liked to read before I purchased this. I hope it helps you!

   I bought this Garmin dashcam 56 model for my second vehicle, since I already have the 55 model (now discontinued) for my truck which I was happy with. The main difference is the wider field of view of 140° compared to 120° of the 55 model – the wider field of view means that objects will be smaller in the image (personally I liked the 120° view, since it captured enough of the critical image without loosing important detail considering the MP of both cameras is the same). The 56 model can accommodate a 512 GB micro SD memory card whereas the 55 model a 256 GB card. I also like the fact that this new model can be used with an app that can be hooked up to a total of 4 cameras (I have not tried this yet) and it also has the “parking mode” feature if you buy the separate cable for it, plus they both have voice commands (which I like). Some people don’t like the small magnetic mount, but I like it because it leaves a very small “footprint” (compared to a suction cup) and keeps the look stealthy. Both models are the same size and I have not had any issues with them so far.

   the dashcam is great! The only thing I wish it had was the feature where it turns on after it detects motion after turning the car off. incase someone hits and runs you at a parking lot
