Some people are naturally creative and others aren’t, right? Wrong. In this classic book on creativity, James Adams takes a unique approach to generating ideas and solving problems that has captivated, inspired, and guided thousands of people from all walks of life to new heights of creativity-whether you are a writer with writers block, or a businesswoman struggling to come up with a new organizational structure.
More than three decades after its original publication, Conceptual Blockbusting has never been more relevant, powerful, or fresh. Integrating insights from the worlds of psychology, engineering, management, art, and philosophy, Adams identifies the key blocks (perceptual, emotional, cultural, environmental, intellectual, and expressive) that prevent us from realizing the full potential of our fertile minds. Employing unconventional exercises and other interactive elements, Adams shows individuals, teams, and organizations how to overcome these blocks, embrace alternative ways of thinking about complex problems, and celebrate the joy of creativity. Completely revised and updated with the latest cognitive science and addressing new subjects such as changes in technology, creativity in large groups, and sustaining creativity over time, Conceptual Blockbusting will introduce a new generation of readers to a world of new possibilities.

Do you wanna start to understand how to deal with all the doubts that affects you when you are trying to solve a problem or create something?Yes?So, buy this book. It is a very good and serious work about one of the most essential and amazing skill that we, humans, carry since we are born.If I had read this book when I was a little student, certainly today I would be much more prepared to solve a wide range of problems and to create a lot more things in my work.

This book should be the number one textbook for all college level creative thinking courses. It also should be a New York Times bestseller.

At first I was skeptical, being a University Professor (Applied Sciences) myself and teaching theories of creativity for now over 15 years I was actually expecting another far out, not realistic how to be creative, worthless guide, which I encountered a lot! But in the contrary – the book proved to be absolutely FANTASTIC, stunning, very constructive, innovative and has a strong connection to the realty of conceptualizing. You get an insight in cognitive science (not too much
) and, if you wish lots of literature and names to follow that path, if you want. Adams mainly draws a connection between science and creativity – combines different disciplines and demonstrates very good how the creative process and its blocks work, how they can be overcome and that the results can be applied whether you’re in design, product design, engineering, advertising or art – to be able to be a creative problem solver and / or conceptualize all those disciplines have an impact and can not be looked upon isolated. So the book was a huge addition to my experience an improved my teaching a lot! I’d like to mention, that there’s a fourth edition that I read also (before) and from my experience in that case it makes a lot of sense to read the fourth first and then the fifth edition – it’s really worth it – if you’re in creativity or your work is influenced by creative processes. I really highly recommend those two editions.

This might be the best book ever written. It is truly comprehensive. If you have made it to here, this book is probably whatever you are looking for.

An academic wrote a book about creativity, and its the most boring book about creativity I never needed to read. No exercises to foster creativity, just lots of lists as to what can stifle creativity.
