The prize-winning translation of Miguel de Cervantes’s mock-epic masterwork
Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote’s fancy leads them wildly astray, tilting at windmills, fighting with friars, and distorting the rural Spanish landscape into a fantasy of impenetrable fortresses and wicked sorcerers. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with.
John Rutherford’s landmark translation of Don Quixote won the 2002 Premio Valle Inclan prize for translation. His introduction discusses the traditional works parodied in Don Quixote and issues of literary translation.
‘John Rutherford makes Don Quixote funny and readable … His Quixote can be pompous, imposingly learned, secretly fearful, mad and touching’ Colin Burrow, The Times Literary Supplement

I’m happy with the book. The only thing that was disappointing to me is that there is some damage to the book. The cover had a bent corner and several silvering spots, which is probably because of the packaging which wasn’t too protective of any content inside of it. refer to photos for an example.

This is so misleading. The book description on the web and the coverpage don’t say anything about it as actually only the book of volume 4 starting at chapter 37???I was expecting the holistic book! Amazon do your job please.Although am I the only one who have this situation? Why do others seem to have the entire book …. ?

This review is for the Don Quixote (Penguin Classics/ISBN-10: 0140449094) translated by John Rutherford. As far as the classic Don Quixote is concerned, it is one of the best books ever written. I would recommend everyone to read it. John Rutherford’s translation is a good one to read without any doubt. This is one of the translations done in 21st century, the others being that of Edith Grossman’s(2003 year/Ecco/Harper Collins), Tom Lathrop’s(2005) and James Montgomery’s (2006). Go for it.As far as the book quality is concerned, the paper quality is good, but the font is small. However I got the book for Rs 349. So I am ok with it. The only complain is the packaging was not properly done by the seller uRead-shop (Prakash eSolutions) and the book was slightly damaged because of that.
