The most comprehensive single-volume photographic guide to Europe’s birds ever produced—from the authors of the acclaimed Britain’s Birds
Covering more than 900 species, and illustrated with 4,700 photographs, Europe’s Birds is the most comprehensive, authoritative and ambitious single-volume photographic guide to Europe’s birds ever produced. Easy-to-use, practical and accessible, this guide provides the information necessary for birdwatchers of all abilities to name any bird they see. Detailed descriptions cover the birds in all their plumages—male, female, breeding, non-breeding, adult and immatures, as well as distinctive subspecies. The clear text covers all aspects of identification, including moult and vocalizations, and provides details on range, status and habitat. An unrivalled selection of photographs, chosen to be as informative as possible, makes this a beautiful book to enjoy, as well as an up-to-date and essential source of identification knowledge.
Europe’s Birds is produced by the same team that created Britain’s Birds, which has been described as “without doubt the best photo guide on the market” (Andy Stoddart, Rare Bird Alert). The authors include top-class wildlife photographers, writers and editors, and an imaginative, highly skilled designer. All are experienced birdwatchers themselves, who know what is needed in an identification guide for birdwatchers living or travelling in Europe.

Ottimo acquisto

Consigliatissima.

Comparison pages such as “larger gulls”, “terns in flight”, “woodpeckers”, “woodpeckers in flight”, “owls”, “warblers” and “buntings compared” are valuable learning tools to help birder familiarize themselves with European birds. Photographs are fantastic and there is substantial details of size, build, coloration, calls/songs, and maps along with photos of male and female breeding, nonbreeding and juvenile plumages for shorebirds, ducks, thrushes, warblers and terns. Codes are a little overwhelming at first but with time easy enough. Maps are a little small and lacking details but good generally to show presence. Outside of the kilo weight and the short index of species going to general introduction pages (e.g. Falcons to Birds of Prey rather than directly to Falcons) this guide is exceptionally well done. If anything, too much detail for novice birders but exceptional to more advanced birders.
A reading birder –
This is a handsome book, nicely produced and visually appealing. Most of the photographs are stunning and most of them reproduced at a satisfyingly large scale; a lot of the birds are also shown in flight, a very nice touch in the case of such groups as finches and sparrows, which most guides show only perched (but see another recent WildGuides title, the magnificent Flight Identification of European Passerines). But I had expected a closer focus on real identification problems, along with new information to help solve them. I don’t find much here that isn’t widely available elsewhere. The organization of the book is also discouraging, at least on first opening it. Rather than strictly following any of the modern taxonomic sequences, the authors have chosen to group some birds by visual “similarity”: grebes and loons with ducks, swifts with swallows, and so on, a practice that feels condescending to the more experienced birder and will ultimately be confusing to the beginner. It seems to me a poor decision, too, to have split the species accounts into two sections, one for more or less regularly occurring birds, the other for “vagrants.” There is no reason not to have integrated the rarer species into the main text, especially given that some of them, such as the American wigeon or the ring-necked duck, aren’t really _all_ that rare in Europe. All these things said, I am enjoying leafing through the book. But this title fails to compete seriously either with the Princeton/Collins guide (which I hear is in a new, 3rd edition in Sweden now) or with the specialty handbooks such as the passerine volumes of Shirihai and Svensson’s Handbook.
