A beautiful and uplifting story from L.D. Lapinski, author of The Strangeworlds Travel Agency, about how to make your own place when the world doesn’t think you fit anywhere, for fans of Me, My Dad and The End of The Rainbow.
Jamie Rambeau is a happy 11-year-old non-binary kid who likes nothing better than hanging out with their two best friends Daisy and Ash. But when the trio find out that in Year Seven they will be separated into one school for boys and another for girls, their friendship suddenly seems at risk. And when Jamie realises no one had thought about where they are going to go, they decide to take matters into their own hands, and sort it all out once and for all.
As complaints at school turn into a rooftop protest against the binary rules for the local schools, Jamie realises that if they don’t figure out a way forwards, they might be at risk of losing both their friends forever.
A beautiful and uplifting new story from L.D. Lapinski about making your own place when the world doesn’t provide one for you, for readers of Alex Gino’s GEORGE (Melissa’s Story), and Benjamin Dean’s ME, MY DAD AND THE END OF THE RAINBOW.

“Jamie” by L.D. Lapinski is a heartwarming story about a non-binary child named Jamie (Rainbow) Rambeau who, at the age of 11, faces the difficult decision of choosing between a boys’ or girls’ school, as all of their best friends are going to different schools. What makes this story so special is the representation of non-binary individuals in a way that is both relatable and educational. Jamie’s journey towards self-discovery and acceptance is beautifully portrayed and will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with their identity. The book also includes informative sections about gender and LGBTQ+ issues, which are presented in a clear and accessible manner. This makes it a great resource for both young readers and adults looking to understand and support the non-binary community.Overall, “Jamie” is an important and empowering book that sheds light on the experiences of non-binary individuals. It is a must-read for anyone looking to expand their knowledge and empathy towards gender diversity.

As a teacher of primary children, I read this book in a matter of days and immediately put in in my grade 6 classroom – the first response from a boy who read it, ‘Awesome! Just brilliant’. I couldn’t agree more. The book is both moving, educational, and makes one think about how the world around us both welcomes and creates invisible barriers.Thank you for this wonderful book!

I had the absolute joy of reading JAMIE in one sitting. The story follows the titular Jamie, a non-binary Year 6 getting ready for high school. When they discover that their only options for high schools are either all-boys or all-girls, Jamie knows that they need to take action. With best friends Daisy and Ash by their side, they question why schools need to be gendered and end up making a big statement that leads to some much needed changes.I won’t go any further into plot specifics, but I have to say this was an absolute joy to read. As a staunch trans and non-binary ally, this book gave me all the feels. I teared up numerous times through this book, in joy, in sadness and in anger. Lapinksi did an absolutely stellar job with this book, and made each character distinct and either likeable or detestable with ease.(I would love a spin-off book about Olly please!)This book is one of the rare ones that I think should genuinely be essential reading for everyone in the education system, for every child, for every parent, for every policy maker, for anyone who can’t see beyond the binary, for anyone.JAMIE is truly a special, insightful, beautiful book, and one I cannot recommend highly enough.
