THE LONG-AWAITED, MOVING MEMOIR OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR HANNAH PICK-GOSLAR.
‘Heartbreaking and life-affirming’ – Edith Eger, bestselling author of The Choice
‘An extraordinary story of love, loss and the power of friendship in the darkest time.’ – Jack Fairweather, Costa prizewinning author of The Volunteer
When five-year-old Hannah Pick-Goslar and her family fled Nazi Germany to live in Amsterdam, she soon struck up a friendship with a precocious, outspoken and fun-loving girl named Anne Frank. For several blissful years, the girls were inseparable, enjoying carefree childhood games and sleepovers in their neighbourhood of Rivierenbuurt.
Then, one day in 1942, two best friends’ lives were about to change for ever. As the Nazi occupation intensified, Anne and the Frank family vanished. As Hannah puzzled over the fate of her friend, hoping she was safe, her own family’s fate began to unfold: they were captured and taken to Westerbork transit camp, before being transported to Bergen-Belsen.
Amid horrific conditions and surrounded by death, Hannah heard astonishing news about her dear friend and risked her life to help her.
‘As a girl I witnessed the world I loved crumble and vanish, destroyed by senseless hatred, and with it, my best friend Anne.’
In an incredible memoir of hope, strength and defiance, Hannah’s story of survival is testament to the enduring power of friendship, love and remembering.

I was first made aware of Hanneli Goslar through reading Anne Frank’s diary many moons ago. I was then made aware of her suffering in concentration camps through “The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank” and her story was a really powerful one amongst many other powerful stories of women who survived the Holocaust.I was always intrigued with the story of Anne Frank and the trials of the residents of the Secret Annex. A hostile 2 years of hiding in Amsterdam only for the residents being captured and then sent to the concentration camps, followed by their eventual demise (with the exception of Otto Frank). It was a wonderful experience getting to know Hanneli through this book. With the help of Dina Kraft, Hanneli tells her story simply and elegantly. You learn more about the horror of World War 2 through her eyes. The memoir of Hanneli was a long time in the making and it paid off. If you’re familiar with the story of Anne Frank, you may or may not find something new about her through this memoir. But you should also be here to read about Hanneli and her life. I was intrigued also to learn more about Hanneli and her family and what exactly she and her family went through from the time the Nazis occupied the Netherlands to when she was freed at last from “The Lost Train” that would have taken her to a different fate had it arrived at the final destination.Hanneli and her sister Gabi would rise from the ashes and squalor of the camps and go on to live full and enriching lives. In Hanneli’s words on her later life, her survival and her eventual extended brood was a “revenge” against Hitler and the Nazi party for the Shoah, one of the world’s greatest and most horrible tragedies. The Holocaust reminds us that such evil acts should never happen again. Yet, with our hostile world right now, one wonders if the evil powers in this world have even learned any lessons from the past. The fact that the genocide of over six million people happened is truly one of humanity’s greatest failures. Through the story of one of Anne Frank’s dear friends, we learn a little more about why something like the Holocaust should never happen again.

When in hiding Anne Frank had visions of her good friend Hanneli begging her for help. Anne was disturbed by this and wondered why it should probably be that she, Anne, should live while Hanneli and others would likely die. Only it was the other way round, Anne died and Hanneli (Hannah) lived. This book is the story of Anne’s best friend, their childhood, their separation when Anne went into hiding – and an unbelievable twist that I will not spoil here. Hannah died last year, but fortunately for us, was able to give the world this incredible book.

As someone who has read The Diary of Anne Frank several times, I was drawn to this book. It is an incredibly important account about a time in our history, not that long ago, when unimaginable atrocities on an unimaginable scale were committed. Something that must NEVER be allowed to happen again.
