This story takes place in the Prohibition-era Ozarks. Our introduction to Willie Henderson happens on a train taking him home, at long last, after a one-year stint in prison where he served time for illegally bootlegging and producing the area’s finest moonshine. Upon his arrival back into Stone County, he is met by Sheriff Michael Baker, the county’s new lawman who has a penchant for dismantling Stone County’s storied illegal moonshining industry. Willie arrives home to find his wife, Mabel, lying in bed, sickly, with her and her young son unable to have afforded her needed medicine. With Mabel’s health rapidly declining and Willie’s breadth of knowledge and talent in shining, Willie is soon left with only one option-to return to his old bootlegging ways. In this highly suspenseful cat-and-mouse Southern thriller, we are taken through a series of chess moves between Willie and his nemesis, Sheriff Michael Baker. Who will outsmart the other? And who will inevitably come out on top?

Iâve gotten to know C.F in recent months. Knowing the book was written by someone from my hometown, and a genuine dude at that, really adds a certain level of personal relationship to the story. I know the area the book is based in. Iâve heard stories from the local old timers of the moonshine days. C.F does a great job of taking the reader back in time, from describing the towns and scenery to the local dialect of small Arkansas towns. This book really makes you feel like youâre there, especially when you are from the area. Itâs like Willy was someone my Great Granddad knew and Iâm hearing his story from someone who was right there in the middle of it all. Iâm not a very good reader and it takes me a while to get through a book, let alone getting into one, but C. F.âs writing is captivating as well as easy to follow. A book by an Arkansan for Arkansans, but it doesnât have to stay in Arkansas! Give this book a read if you want a true taste of what the natural state was like back in the day!

I highly recommend this book for everyone to read.It is well written and takes place in Arkansas during the time of prohibition. Itâs a story of a man having to do the only trade he knows in order to save his family. In the process is a sheriff is trying to take him down.

The book is easy to read, because it is very engaging and the pages fly by quickly. I live in Arkansas not far from where the book takes place. All of the characters felt very natural and authentic. They did not feel forced or like some overwritten stereotype. The story unfolds at a good pace mixing between building the characters and building suspense in the story. Even those this is set in post WWI and centers around a story of illegal moonshine running, the charcters still felt very relatable in the way the characters all try to navigate their world and survive as best they can with the hand they are delt. The story follows Willie Henderson’s attempt to do right, but also trying to figure out what is the “right” thing to do. The reader cannot help but feel a wide range of emotions, connecting with this character on his journey.
