In 1937, Mao was in retreat after ten years of battling the Nationalist troops of Chiang Kai-shek. During this period, he wrote a succinct pamphlet that remains one of the most influential documents on warfare to this date. This treatise, the first systematic analysis of guerilla warfare, established Mao as the architect of a new method of warfare. The treatise is translated and introduced by General Samuel B. Griffith. USMC, a leading military strategist of the era.

A very enjoyable read, and was well translated into English from Chinese. Mao is clearly a great military leader who understands guerilla warfare very well.

After reading this book more than once, one can only say that Mao Tse Tung, in relation to his theories on military strategy and guerrilla warfare, is nothing short than a military genius. He covers important aspects not on speculation, but on first-hand experience and Scientific analysis specifically in reference to his theory of “Protracted Peoples War”.The argument that slowly a revolutionary army should create liberated zones, and through those liberated zones, educate the people and persuade them to fight for the revolutionary cause, is once more, believable and more Scientific than when compared to other strategic theories written on this type of warfare.Mao Tse Tung’s work in this book is invaluable and should be required reading for all people who wish to effectively defend their homeland from foreign invasion or intevention. This book in particular with an introduction by Samuel L Griffin, a former major General of the US Military, is especially profound. Griffin keeps his introduction objective, although it is also clear, that he admires Mao Tse Tung and considers him an intellectual when writing on military strategy.
