An Amazon Charts bestseller
From New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman comes a heartfelt short story about family, independence, and finding your place in the world.
Isabel Gibson has all but perfected the art of forgetting. She’s a New Yorker now, with nothing left to tie her to Brinkley’s Island, Maine. Her parents are gone, the family bookstore is all but bankrupt, and her sister, Sophie, will probably never speak to her again.
But when a mysterious letter arrives in her mailbox, Isabel feels herself drawn to the past. After years of fighting for her independence, she dreads the thought of going back to the island. What she finds there may forever alter her path—and change everything she thought she knew about her family, her home, and herself.

.A beautiful tribute to the way sisters can and can’t be. a tribute to place, to Maine, to Art, to dogs, to love. It’s short and sweet in all the best ways. Hoffman brings to life the most wonderful, imaginary bookstore.

Alice Hoffman conveys the feeling of homecoming in just 36 pages. This lovely short story is not only moving but also entertaining. It’s a great read.

I always like a story about books and book stores. This one is about sisters who parted after their parents died. Sophie stayed and kept her fatherâs book store open and Isabel left to forget her pain in New York City. But when Sophieâs daughter, Violet, asked her to come and help, Isabel went back and found not only her sister, but herself that she had forgotten.Short stories are wonderful and frustrating at the same time. They donât waste time getting to the heart of the matter but they are over so quickly just when you feel like you are getting to know the people and place. This is a good story and Iâm glad I read it. Thank you to Amazon for the ARC; the opinions are my own.

Lovely little story about two sisters. Love and loss. Dogs and daughters. Coming home. And of course a book shop

I enjoyed this book very much. Beautifully narrated, the author successfully managed to create well-rounded characters in a 36 page story that will keep you turning pages. Before you know it, youâve completed it. Despite the shortness of the story, I did not find it lacking in emotions or imagery.
