The Green Mile: those who walk it do not return, because at the end of that walk is the room in which sits Cold Mountain penitentiary’s electric chair. But nothing is as it seems with John Coffey, and around him unfolds a bizarre and horrifying story.

Evil murderer or holy innocent – whichever he is – Coffey has strange powers which may yet offer salvation to others, even if they can do nothing to save him.

A novel that makes you think
The leitmotif of the novel is death. While in most novels the villains die (normally in some atrocious way) and heroes live happily ever after, this novel faces the truth: even good ones die, sometimes atrociously, sometimes prematurely. And even a long life can be a torture, a sort of punishment. Therefore life is a mistery and its end gives no clue to its real meaning.Every reader is free to see the logic and the message he / she wishes in this novel. It is not a horror novel, I would say it is a psichological drama. Uh: it is a masterpiece.

This book came on time and packaged well. I ordered it so that I could lend it out! I have the original chapter books and don’t want to lend them. As far as the Novel goes, I’d suggest that even though you are among most who has seen the movie; this book is worth reading. I have read Stephen King novels since I was a young adult and never have been disappointed.

There are only a few stories out there that have affected me to such a degree that I actually break down in a weeping mess. Very few.The Green Mile is one of those few. While this is sometimes regarded as a departure of SK’s, more of a supernatural drama than horror, I feel it is one of his best written.I wept for John Coffey. I wept for Mr Jingles. And for Paul, our protagonist who is swept along for the ride of it all.The non-linear style of the story being told may at times be jarring for a reader. It wasn’t for me, but I can understand the comments I’ve otherwise read about it. Would it have been better told more linear? I really don’t know, but what it is was enough for me.I also read it in a collected volume, not like the serial release collection it was back in the day. So the small spaces of time readers had to wait until the next book came out wasn’t something I got to enjoy. But as a single volume (which is probably the only way you can get it today) is a powerful piece of literature. Read it.

This has blown me away. I’m a blubbering mess after reading it – but the moving storyline, the beautiful use of language, the fast pace, the characters and their profound relationships with one another (good and bad) make the tears worth it.The systemic racism is a heartbreaking stab in the gut but so crucially important- and King writes it brilliantly. The undercurrent of love, compassion and spirituality throughout the book make it beautiful and profound. An emotional read but nevertheless a page turner. Each chapter ends with you wanting to know what happens next. The villains are so perfectly despicable- almost like demons in humans clothing- but the other characters are also flawed and three dimensional. Love or loathe them, you want to know what happens to them.At once poignant and suspenseful.
