The Return is at once a universal and an intensely personal tale. It is an exquisite meditation on how history and politics can bear down on an individual life. And yet Hisham Matar’s memoir isn’t just about the burden of the past, but the consolation of love, literature and art. It is the story of what it is to be human.
Hisham Matar was nineteen when his father was kidnapped and taken to prison in Libya. He would never see him again. Twenty-two years later, the fall of Gaddafi meant he was finally able to return to his homeland. In this moving memoir, the author takes us on an illuminating journey, both physical and psychological; a journey to find his father and rediscover his country.
‘A beautifully-written memoir that skillfully balances a graceful guide through Libya’s recent history with the author’s dogged quest to find his father’ Barack Obama

Vly Summit –
An account of the grief for a beloved father, imprisoned in Libya. His death was never confirmed. He was disappeared. The love and suffering of the family left behind, and the struggle for the truth, is narrated with such sensitivity and intelligence that the unique becomes universal.
LUZIA GUERREIRO –
Reading Matar is like discovering another world. Itâs the best book Iâve read in a long time.
Flavie F. –
I think I enjoyed this book but I don’t remember to develop more, sorry!
R Chester Leggett –
It is not uncommon for us to assume the world is getting better, how eventually non-Western nations will catch-up and provide peace and prosperity to their people. Matar reminds us that evil lurks in the heart of man and that nations can horribly degrade. But Matar overlooks not love, admiration for a father and uncles, nor hope for something better. In a nudging and slow-handed way, his prose reminds the reader of man’s relationship with the transcendent. Nothing forced, not tacky, but receptive, open and honest. The book has the power to take you outside of the cell we can find ourselves imprisoned in…the cell of affluence.

eye-opening, autobiographical novel which tells a very personal experience of events linked to libyan politics of the past few decades. quite informative and touching to read a real story like this from more recent years. also great architectural descriptions and written in a way that stimulates profound thoughts and feelings.i think key is that this is an autobiographical novel, not a suspense thriller… the descriptions and anecdotes are worth the read of almost 300 pages
