  1. Cliente Amazon

    Masterpiece

    Capolavoro!
Avrò letto questo libro mille volte! In italiano.

    A classic
The Shining by Stephen King is a masterful work that stands as one of the cornerstones of horror literature. First published in 1977, this novel continues to captivate and terrify readers with its intensity and skill in creating suspense. The story follows Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a job as the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, an old and isolated resort in the Colorado mountains. Accompanied by his wife Wendy and his son Danny, a boy with extraordinary psychic abilities known as “the shining,” Jack’s situation deteriorates as the isolation and dark past of the hotel begin to exert their influence. As Jack descends into madness, the tension escalates to a crescendo of terror. What struck me most about The Shining is Stephen King’s ability to build an oppressive and unsettling atmosphere. The Overlook Hotel is not merely the backdrop but becomes a character in its own right, with a palpable presence that affects the actions and destinies of the protagonists. King uses the isolated setting and the psychology of his characters to heighten the sense of claustrophobia and paranoia, leading the reader through an immersive and harrowing experience.Jack Torrance, in particular, is a complex and multifaceted character. His gradual descent into madness is depicted with a psychological depth that makes his transformation both tragic and disturbing. The novel explores themes such as parenthood, addiction, and the struggle against inner demons, reflected in the conflicts and family dynamics.Danny, with his “shining,” adds another layer of mystery and horror. His telepathic connection with Dick Hallorann and the terrifying visions of the future contribute to an increasing sense of dread and suspense.Iconic scenes, such as the encounter with the hotel’s ghosts and the famous phrase “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” are brilliant examples of King’s ability to turn the mundane into something extraordinarily unsettling.Despite my great admiration for this novel, I would rate it 4 stars out of 5. This is because, in some sections, the narrative can feel a bit slow, and the detailed descriptions of certain scenes might seem excessive to some readers. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise exceptional work. The Shining is undoubtedly one of the essential reads for horror enthusiasts. King’s mastery in crafting a compelling and frightening story places it among the great classics of literature. If you’re ready to confront a tale that delves into the darkest recesses of the human mind, this novel is an unmissable choice.

I never thought I’d become a Stephen King fan at the age of 43, especially as I dislike horror more than any other genre, but I have done a complete 180!Stephen King creates characters who are so relatable, so real, so utterly convincing, and he weaves them into believable and mesmerising stories which simply cannot be put down unless you absolutely have to sleep, eat, ot use the toilet!I read Carrie, then moved onto The Shining, and then read Dr Sleep. Both The Shining and Dr Sleep are an unexpected in depth exploration of alcoholism and recovery which I lost myself in.The Shining is probably one of the best books I have read, and will ever read. Although it comes across as horror, if you know of addiction, you could interpret it to simply be the self destruction of a man in the throes of alcoholism. The horror element, to me, was like a description of the before, during, and after of a bender! The emotional rollercoaster I went through reading this book made me feel like I had literally lived through every page of it.Absolutely incredible writing: Stephen King is an absolute master of his craft.*Update: I’m now on my 4th Stephen King novel in two months and I am hooked.

  12. Emily Helal

A masterpiece of character and a striking psychological thriller.

The lockdown of a caretaker with his wife and son in an old haunted hotel in the mountain during a winter. The caretaker is an alcoolic but there is no alcohol in the hotel . His son is shining. Both are the victim of hallucination. His wife doesn’ t trust her husband any more because he has once broken his son’ s arm. She also has hallucinations. The hotel is trying to kill them.A very good story.
