An island home invaded, the Silone flee to the south. Those lands ahead less than welcoming. It will be a journey of suffering & sacrifice. Where survival relies on the courageous. Some compelling characters here! Moving & action packed. Great middle instalment!

Trail of Pyres picks up where Eve of Snows left off, but if you thought you had a good sense of what there was to worry about in this world, you don’t know the half of it. The threats in Eve of Snows were epic, and these have not diminished, but new equally existential threats emerge in this book, and the nature of these is familiar to anyone acquainted with the darker sides of human culture. Favorite characters remain and their stories evolve in complex and satisfying ways. New characters and civilizations greatly expand on the already rich world that Rice has created. The scope of the world is so greatly expanded that I felt a nostalgic longing for the relatively intimate homelands inhabited in Eve of Snows. This sensation is a testament to the quality of the writing. We experience the same pangs of anxiety and sense of loss that weigh on our reluctant heroes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am eagerly awaiting the next.In response to the review that commented on the proof reading. I can only assume that this reader must have received a printing of an early draft (I think this, like many books these days, are printed on demand). I only noticed a handful of very minor editing/proofing errors and I’m fairly sensitive to such problems.

Brilliant second book in the series, interesting characters that you grow to care about tot much. Twists and turns and plenty of intrigue. Bring on book three.

It was a fun read on vacation.

Took a bit of time to get into but worth the effort. A bit too much lurching from one disaster to another though.
